Department
of Guru Nanak Studies
The Department of Guru Nanak Studies has been publishing two journals i.e. Journal of Sikh Studies (since 1974) and Perspectives on
Guru Granth Sahib (since 2003). The Centre for Guru Nanak Studies was established in the department under the X Plan of U.G.C. Scheme
on the Epoch Making Social Thinkers of India. A Grant of Rs. 24 Lacs along with separate provision for two Project Fellows was
sanctioned for the department under the Special Assistance Programme (U.G.C.) for five years commencing from session 2007-2008.
The Department of Guru Nanak Studies was set up in 1971 to meet the obligation of the Article IV of the Guru Nanak Dev University Act, 1969 which is as follows:
" To make provision for study and research on the life and teachings of Guru Nanak Dev and their cultural and religious impact in the context of Indian and World Civilizations."
Therefore, the Department of Guru Nanak Studies is an inter-disciplinary as well as Teaching-cum-Research Department. Within the over-all purview of the relevant provision in the University Act, the Department of Guru Nanak Studies was expected to extend its area of activity so as to achieve the obligation of the Act.
